New Wheat

on

“When she got up to glean, Bo‘az ordered his young men, “Let her glean even among the sheaves themselves, without making her feel ashamed. In fact, pull some ears of grain out from the sheaves on purpose. Leave them for her to glean, and don’t rebuke her.” (Ruth 2:15-16)

God gave Moses an instruction for the reaping of the harvest during the Feast of Weeks, “And when you reap the harvest of your land, you will not wholly reap the corners of your field when you reap, neither will you gather any gleaning of your harvest.  You will leave them for the poor and the strangers.  I AM the LORD your God!”  (Leviticus 23:22 ONM). All the instructions God gave to Moses for the Feast of Weeks were a shadow of Christ; The Passover (Jesus crucified), Unleavened Bread (Jesus buried), and First Fruits (Jesus resurrected).

The relationship between Ruth and Boaz is an allegory of our now kinsman-redeemer relationship with Jesus.  We no longer reap on the corners of the field for blessings. As kindreds by blood, we now can reap a full Omar (heap, a bunch of grain, handful) of harvest.  Just as Ruth who arrived into Bethlehem a poor Moabite stranger, Jesus allows us to glean among the sheaves from the fullness of His harvest.  Now we can lay at the feet of the Lord and He covers us with His skirt, “Now I passed by you again and looked upon you; behold, you were maturing and at the time for love, and I spread My skirt over you and covered your nakedness. Yes, I plighted My troth to you and entered into a covenant with you, says the Lord, and you became Mine.” (Ezekiel 16:8). God told them to offer a new grain fifty days after First Fruits which happens to be on Pentecost, “To the day after the seventh week you will number fifty days and you will offer a new grain (wheat) offering to the LORD” (Leviticus 23:16). Jesus said He came to fulfill the law (Matthew 5:17), so after He resurrected as the First Fruit, fifty days later (Pentecost), God poured out on us a new grain (wheat), the indwelling of His Precious Holy Spirit.  No longer strangers but kinsman of the Lord we don’t have to reap from the corners of the spiritual field we can now run into the field and reap as much as we want of the new wheat.
