Leave Your Coat Behind

on

“Blessed (happy, to be envied) is the man who is patient under trial and stands up under temptation, for when he has stood the test and been approved, he will receive [the victor’s] crown of life which God has promised to those who love Him.” (James 1:12)

There are friendships that may have formulated all the way back to kindergarten. Now there could be an occasion with some friendships that the Lord seems to want to sever.  The Lord is trying to order your steps into the direction He wants you to go but you are tugging and struggling to maintain this relationship.   Maybe being in the friendship for all those years you become blinded to the road they are taking you down which is in contrast to the one the Lord has for you.  Maybe you are unequally yoked in the friendship and their values don’t equal to your biblical ones but you ignore it because they are your friend.

God is concerned about the company you keep, “God’s blessings follow you and await you at every turn:  when you don’t follow the advice of those who delight in wicked schemes, when you avoid sin’s highway, when judgment and sarcasm beckon you, but you refuse” (Psalm 1:1 Voice).   Joseph didn’t compromise his values to keep his obligation, loyalty, and gratitude to Potiphar when Potiphar’s wife tried to seduce him. He was willing to leave his coat (Genesis 39:12) than to compromise into sin. Do you compromise your Christian values just to keep a friendship even when they don’t believe or cherish the ways and things of God like you?  We take council and delight in the things of God, “But his delight and desire are in the law of the Lord, and on His law (the precepts, the instructions, the teachings of God) he habitually meditates (ponders and studies) by day and by night” (Psalm 1:2 AMPC).

We’re living in the generation of the soon coming King.  He wants to connect in our lives those who will help further the Gospel of His Kingdom, not dead weight that will hold us back.  Stop putting your coat back on and following those who don’t delight in the things of God.  Leave your coat behind or lose your character.
