However, brethren, I could not talk to you as to spiritual [men], but as to nonspiritual [men of the flesh, in whom the carnal nature predominates], as to mere infants [in the new life] in Christ [unable to talk yet!] (1 Corinthians 3:1)
Recently at the store, I was in line with a little boy the age of five. He was sitting in a stroller concentrating and playing a video game on a cell phone while intensely sucking on a binky. Not only did this seem to look cute and normal to those around but also appeared that way to the mother. Maybe this is the explanation of the rearing children get now that cause them to carry this same immature comforting into adulthood to deal with life.
The Apostle Paul had to address this type of behavior in the congregation. Because they weren’t growing up spiritually he said he had to speak to them as infants. They were still on formula, “I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not yet strong enough [to be ready for it]; but even yet you are not strong enough [to be ready for it],” (1 Corinthians 3:2). Unfortunately, the Corinthians are not alone, this behavior is still prevalent today in the churches. I listen to many ministries and either before or after they give the unadulterated word of God they apologize so as no one will get offended. They only want to hear ‘happy church’ not anything in the word with meat that will give them the protein needed to strengthen and grow into the spiritual person God called them to be. Just as that toddler they want to sit and listen from the comfortable ‘pew’ stroller and intensely suck on their binky. Not only are you immature but also lacking any type of spirituality, “For you are still [unspiritual, having the nature] of the flesh [under the control of ordinary impulses]. For as long as [there are] envying and jealousy and wrangling and factions among you, are you not unspiritual and of the flesh, behaving yourselves after a human standard and like mere (unchanged) men?” (1 Corinthians 3:3) totally inept of any power. We need to be bringing forth fruit and teaching others, “For even though by this time you ought to be teaching others, you actually need someone to teach you over again the very first principles of God’s Word. You have come to need milk, not solid food” (Hebrews 5:12).
Get off the infant Pabulum, “Like newborn babies you should crave (thirst for, earnestly desire) the pure (unadulterated) spiritual milk, that by it you may be nurtured and grow unto [completed] salvation,” (1 Peter 2:2) drink grown-up milk that will nourish your spirit and help you grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. Throw away your binky!
