Excess Baggage

on

I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way thou shalt go; I will guide thee with mine eye (Psalm 32:8)

We want to go on that guided tour with God, but like most travelers now, we want to carry a lot of our baggage with us. The airlines are now charging a fee for extra baggage. It is the same way with our walk with God—when we try to carry baggage with us on His journey, we will end up paying for it. So before our path is finished, we give out because the load starts to get heavy, and we can’t go on. God wants to do just the opposite; He wants to make our load and burdens light as we go forth in the Kingdom of God. He wants us to check our baggage at the altar before we begin the journey of our high calling. And guess what? Unlike the airlines, there is no charge for checking baggage or for any excess baggage—God takes it for free.

One time, Jesus gave instructions to the disciples for them not to take anything with them. This would make the instructions agree with God taking care of you and guiding you with His eye. I also believe this is why the children of Israel were instructed to only gather manna daily. They had to totally depend on God. Jesus even said in His instructions on prayer, “Give us this day our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11). This shows total and daily dependence upon God.

Fortunately, God is in the habit of losing baggage. Unlike the airlines, nothing valuable gets lost—only those sins, bondages and memories that weighed you down and caused you pain, get tossed into that sea to be remembered no more. Sometimes, after it gets tossed, we or other people want to go scuba diving and retrieve it. When people try to bring up my past against me, I instruct them to quit scuba diving in my sea. God’s lost-baggage policy will gain us a deeper more intimate relationship with Him. We will be able to hear clearly the plans and thoughts He has for us, and will be submissively ready to be instructed and taught in the way we should go.
